Happy Monday !
This weeks schedule is a little crazy because of a few events. Tuesday dismissal will be at 10 am so that students and faculty can attend the Fitzmaurice Celebration of life. Wednesday will be the 1:30 and 7 pm Shakespeare performance by the 5th /6th grades. Thursday will be the 1:30 and 7 pm Shakespeare performance by the 7th/8th grades. Friday is a noon dismissal day with free dress.
6th math: We will be focusing on lessons 98-103. We will also be doing some problems at the beginning of class that are longer word problems. I call this exercise "number talk" because we discuss our methods and answers after working for a bit.
8th math: We will be focusing on lessons 87-90. Students also have a problem of the week, that was introduced Monday and due Friday. Students must show work with answers.
7th math: We will be focusing on lessons 91-94. We will also be doing some problems at the beginning of class that are
longer word problems. I call this exercise "number talk" because we
discuss our methods and answers after working for a bit.
7/8 Science: We will be focusing on electromagnets. Students will be constructing them later on this week after learning about them.
6 Science: Students will learn about the greenhouse effect and its connection to solar radiation. We will then do a lab about these concepts. The next section is about the states of matter.
5 Science: Students will be focusing on the Endocrine system. We have created "word study books" that students will put important vocabulary in. We will be watching videos and labeling diagrams throughout the week.

Happy Earth Day!
I hope everyone enjoyed Earth Day yesterday. We have a busy week ahead, as students are preparing for the Shakespeare play next week and getting their Art pieces ready for Friday's art show.
6 math: Students will be focusing on lessons 95-98. These involve changing decimals and mixed numbers to percents. They will be given a pretest 14 on Wednesday, and it will be gone over in class Thursday. The test 14 will be Friday.
7 math: Students will be working on the lessons 88-91. We will also be taking timed integer tests to try and perfect our adding and subtracting of integers. They will be given a pretest 14 on Wednesday, and it will be gone over in class Thursday. The test 14 will be Friday.
8 math: Students will be focusing on lesson 86, which involves dividing polynomials. This is a complicated concept and we will be practicing it all week. We will also be spending some time working with functions and the vertical line test. They will be given a pretest 14 on Wednesday, and it will be gone over in class Thursday. The test 14 will be Friday.
7/8 Science: We will be focusing on insulators, conductors, resistance, Ohm's law, and super conductors. Students will be watching videos, taking notes, and constructing their own circuits in Labs this week. They will have a quiz next week over this section.
6 Science: Students will finish the section on heat transfers, specific heat and insulators and conductors. They will get a study guide Tuesday for a quiz Thursday over this section. We will then begin a lab on insulators and conductors of heat. I need a lot of sunshine to do this lab, so I have had to put it off a few times. I hope for some sunshine soon! We will also be tending to our flowers in the garden.
5 Science: Students will review the different systems of the body and their functions for a quiz Thursday. We will also be tending to our flowers in the garden. The Endocrine system will be studied in detail in the weeks to come.

Welcome back!
I hope everyone had a great and relaxing Easter break!
April is a busy month. We have the beach clean-up this Friday, book fair this Saturday, and Art Fair next Friday.
In class we will be focusing on the following
Math classes: I will be sharing a few math games I learned over break with the kids, including "BUZZ" and "mental math tiles." We will also be reviewing the 5 lessons that were assigned over break and starting a new one as well
7/8 Science: Students will start to see how magnetism and electricity are related. This will be seen through various demos including compasses and, electric circuits, and magnets. They will have a quiz over electricity and magnets next week. The 7th grade will have a special chance to experiment with hand-powered generators and compare them to how larger power-plant generators work.
6 Science: Students will continue to learn about thermal energy and heat. The focus this week will be on heat transfer. Students will experiment with how heat travels through different materials by building some houses and tracking their temperatures while in the sun. We will also spend some time planting our seeds for the "Plant, grow, eat," program with the Del Mar Fair. The seeds will be planted and taken care of by students until June, when we will take them to the fair to be judged.
5 Science: Students will review the basic systems of the body, and start to focus on the endocrine system. We will be watching videos, taking notes and filling out diagrams. We will also spend some time planting our seeds for the "Plant, grow, eat," program with the Del Mar Fair. The seeds will be planted and taken care of by students until June, when we will take them to the fair to be judged.
