This week in class we will be focusing on the following
6th grade math: We will be working on lessons 71-74. Students will also be working on creating images using what they know about the coordinate graph system. They will have a pretest on Wednesday and Test 11 on Friday.
7th grade math: We will be working on lessons 69-72. Students will be working on showing how to add integers on a number line, and then watching a brain-pop video on adding and subtracting integers. They will have a pretest on Wednesday and Test 11 on Friday.
8th grade math: This is an important week for 8th grade since we will be focusing on factoring trinomials.Students will practice these for homework and play a game to practice them in class. They will have a pretest on Wednesday and Test 11 on Friday.
7/8 Science: Students will spend Monday and Tuesday reviewing for a quiz on Wednesday on Energy sources and conversions. See the study guide I sent home to help them study. Thursday and Friday they will preform a "soaring straws" lab that focuses on elastic potential energy.
6 Science: Students will explore the parts of the volcano and draw their own diagrams listing the different parts. Then we will learn more about the different kinds of magma and eruptions. We will end the week by watching a video on one of the most famous Volcanic eruptions in history, Mt. St. Helens.
5 Science: Students will spend Monday and Tuesday reviewing asexual reproduction in plants. Their quiz will be on Wednesday, and then the focus will be turned onto sexual reproduction in plants. See the study guide I sent home to help them study for their quiz. They will study the parts of the flower and how they work together to reproduce.

Details about Thursday 2/23
6th grade math: We explored how to cross simplify fractions when multiplying them. We created our own problems and solved each others. Then we played a multiplying soccer game on the starboard.
8th grade math: took Test 10 B
7th grade math: We discovered what a unit price is, and how it helps us find the best deal. Students created their own unit price problems, and we solved each others' trying to find the best deal. Students will apply this to lesson 67 tonight for homework. Students also had time to finish test 10B in class.
7/8 Science: In the discover activity, we experienced a transfer of kinetic to potential energy. We read and took notes on energy conversions. Students were given lots of examples to record in their notes. Their homework is to continue reading pages 150-151 and take notes. The notes will be checked and discussed tomorrow.
6 Science: We built on the knowledge from yesterday by viewing a Discover video on Monteserat and its volcano. We read about the different locations that volcanoes occur, and real life examples of them. Students were shown pictures of volcanoes in the Northwest USA and we compared how they look. Students also viewed a short video on the Pacific Rim of Fire, and we discussed volcanoes on the ocean floor.
5 Science: Students filled in a guided notes worksheet about the information they learned yesterday. They also completed a diagram of the parts of a fern, and the life cycle of a conifer. We started discussing the different ways plants reproduce, sexually and asexually. We will continue this for the next week or so.

Ash Wednesday
I hope everyone had a chance to attend Ash Wednesday Mass today, and reflect on what this Lent season's goals are. Today's schedule was a bit different because of all school 10am mass, and then a Jr. Honor Society Ceremony with some of the 8th graders. Congrats to the new members!
6th Graders took a math test and did a little silent reading this morning. I allowed them to check out books from the school library and my classroom library, but please encourage them to bring in their own books too!
7th Graders took a math test, but not all finished. Some of them will have to finish in class tomorrow.
6th Graders started in Volcano unit today. We took some notes on the first two pages of the section. The notes were modeled on the whiteboard, and checked at the end of class.
We also did an experiment testing the carbonation levels of warm and cold soda. The warm soda had more fizz/carbonation! This will connect to volcanoes later on in the unit, since they have gases inside them as well.
5th Grade Science: We reviewed the 4 types of plants and watched several Discovery videos on them. Students took notes and shared new information. We also discussed what vascular and nonvascular plants are, and what it means to be vascular. We watched 2 Brainpop videos on this. Then, students were asked to write on a piece of paper what it means to be vascular. This will be discussed in more detail tomorrow.

Happy February!
This month is a busy one! Valentines day was a success and thanks to all that sent in treats and valentines. The 5th grade is preparing for a Science Fair, and the final product will be available to be seen on Tuesday the 21st at 6:30 pm. All are invited to see their projects and the winners.
Other important dates: We have president's day off on the 20th, and then a Fat Tuesday celebration on the 21st. Ash Wednesday is on the 22nd and starts Lent. The Gala is on Saturday the 25th.
I am putting together a 7th and 8th grade group for the St. Augustine Math Competition in March and am looking for parent volunteers to help out and coach them after-school. If you are interested or want more information, please let me know. The competition is on March 10th from 9am-noon. Thanks so much ~ Ms. McQuade
